A Fad For Some, A Life For Others

If I wasn’t sold before on the impact social media has on society today, now I am. From marriage to jobs to taking over small countries, social media seems to be doing it all. Take a minute to watch this YouTube video, you’ll be surprised:

The main point of this video is to prove social media is not a fad, but a revolution, and though I think this video is very well done and has incredible statistics about social media and how it plays in the world today, I am not completely sold on the fact that it is not a fad.

By definition a fad is “a fashion that is taken up with great enthusiasm for a brief period of time; a craze.” According to the YouTube video in order to reach 50 million users it took radio 38 years, TV 13 years, the Internet 4 years, and the iPod 3 years. Facebook, on the other hand, out did every single one of these mediums by reaching 100 million users in less than nine months. If that is not “a fashion taken up with great enthusiasm,” I’m not sure what is.

I’m not saying that social media isn’t here to stay, I hope it is. I’m just not sure it’s safe to say that it’s is out of the fad stage yet. Only time will tell…

Do the Pros Outweigh the Cons in SMRNs?

A couple of weeks ago we were working on our social media news releases (SMNR) and I found that I very torn between whether I thought they were a good or bad idea.

This is one template, but there are a few variations of this that can be used.
This is one template, but there are a few variations of this that can be used.

The body of SMNRs vary from that of the traditional news release. It is all broken up between different sections, and bullets are often used. Opinions can vary over whether or not this layout is effective or not. While doing my background research on social media news releases a came across a blog post entitled Social Media Press Release Blown Away in Hail of Bullets, where the author bashes SMNRs for a few reasons, the layout and formatting being one. Another blog post I found was Study Shows Social Media Releases Are Less Affective Than Traditions Press Releases, in this post the author likes the idea of SMNRs but gives some advice on how she believes you should do and not do.

From my experience creating a mock SMNR and from my research, I have come up with some things I believe to be a positive aspect of SMNRs and some that are a negative:

  • Pros: They are very interactive. Links, videos, photos, etc. are all available right there on screen. Bullets allow one to jump around the screen and get the information the need quickly. By breaking up the body of traditional news releases into sections suck as “news” and “approved quotes” the reader is once aging able to filter out the information they need quickly.
  • Cons: They can be hard to format with these extra multimedia options, and can get “lost” or not labeled as a news release more often than traditional releases. All the extra multimedia may get busy and confusing, so might the different sections and the bulleting.

Though I know what I like about SMNRs and what I do not, I’m still not sure if I think the overall concept is effective or not. Do the pros outweigh the cons?

For Play, For Work

According to Wikipedia, “Web 2.0 is commonly associated with web development and web design that facilitates interactive information sharing, interoperability, user-centered design[1] and collaboration on the World Wide Web. Examples of Web 2.0 include web-based communities, hosted services, web applications, social-networking sites, video-sharing sites, wikis, blogs, mashups and folksonomies.” In short, Web 2.0 is all the different ways we communicated and share information with others on a social level, via the internet. Enterprise 2.0 is that same idea however, applied to businesses. Enterprise 2.0 “provides business managers with access to the right information at the right time through a web of inter-connected applications, services and devices.”

As a college student that has been using MySpace, Facebook, Photo Bucket and YouTube for years, the concept of communicating with others via Internet comes second nature to me. Before learning what Web 2.0 and Enterprise 2.0 meant, I didn’t even realize there was a specific name for this sort of communication. After coming across a video on YouTube entitled Enterprise 2.0: Hype or Happening?, I realized how new socializing and information sharing over the internet was to so many people outside the college environment.

Personally I think Enterprise 2.0 is happening. Such an easy way to communicate and share information with others regardless of location is a no brainer to me. In this day and age people want something, and immediately, Enterprise 2.o allows this and will only continue to grow over the next few years as more skeptics jump on board and technology strengthens.

What is it you think? Is Enterprise 2.0 just a hype or is it really happening? How has Web 2.0 and/or Enterprise 2.0 effected you?
